Michael Jr. A Genius of Comedy
Michael Jr.'s career started in quite an unusual way. Many years before he became famous, he was sitting in a movie theater in Grand Rapids, Michigan. During the movie, the projector malfunctioned, causing the lights to go on, the movie to stop, and those in the theater to become quite upset. One of Michael's friends dared him to stand up in front of the entire theater and perform for them. Not wanting to disappoint, he did exactly as he was told and began his very first comedy routine. The theater manager became quite distressed, and asked Michael to leave. However, those seated in the theater demanded that he stay. At this moment, Michael discovered his gift for making people laugh.
After performing locally and hosting small comedy nights, Michael was discovered by famous comedian, George Wallace. Wallace decided to take Michael to the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach. This was the place where Jay Leno and the "Tonight Show"ÌÎ_̴Ìà? staff performed. Wallace was able to convince the club's owner to sneak Michael inside, where he slipped on to the stage to perform. Just one week later, Michael was performing at the "Just for Laughs"ÌÎ_̴Ìà? festival of comedy in Montreal. The Tonight Show featured him via satellite performance, marking the first time they had ever done that.
After this performance, his career began to take off at an alarming rate. He performed on The Tonight Show once more, Jimmy Kimmel Live, CNN, The Late Late Show, TV One, The Tom Joyner Show, Daybreak USA, ComedyTV, and many more places. He was rocketed into stardom, and began touring. He can be found at the most prestigious comedy clubs around the world, including The Laugh Factory, The Comic Strip, The Comedy Store, The Punchline, among others. Not only has he made multiple TV appearances and appeared in comedy clubs, but he also has traveled to many different universities and churches. These include Notre Dame, the University of Alabama, the University of Massachusetts, Willow Creek Church (a 60,000 member church in Chicago), West Angeles Church (a 17,000 member church in Los Angeles), and New Life Church (a 10,000 member church in Colorado Springs).
Michael Jr. A Versatile Comedian
Another thing that sets Michael apart from his fellow comedians is his versatility. In Laughing On Purpose, he comfortably performs at the most prestigious comedy clubs in the world one day and then performs for a small church the next day. He believes in "comedy accountability", which is what he calls his wide range of venues.
Not only does he masterfully perform comic routines, Michael Jr. has also authored a children's book. This book, entitled "The Parts We Play", is about discovering the importance of your role in life. It follows a girl named Little Gracie, who is spending a day at the amusement park with her father. On the way to the park, the car parts come to life. They all believe that their job is the most important, resulting in an argument. They decide to swap roles to see what happens. In doing this, they discover that they cannot fulfill each other's jobs. This leads them to discover that their job is unique and equally as important as everyone else's role. They work together once more and the car resumes working. This book is set in a comic book style that greatly appeals to children. It is filled with hilarious drawings and Michael's unique blend of humor. This book was featured on the popular comedy DVD, Thou Shalt Laugh.
In addition to his comedy movies like Laughing on Purpose, Michael also played a role in the Kendrick Brothers' most recent film, War Room. He played the role of Michael Alexander, the main character's friend and spiritual mentor. He was also featured on Thou Shalt Laugh, a showcase of seven different Christian comedians. Thou Shalt Laugh includes Taylor Mason, Thor Ramsey, Gilbert Esquivel, Jeff Allen, Joby Saad, Teresa Roberts Logan, and, of course, Michael Jr. himself.
In 2010, Michael produced another film, entitled Comedy: The Road Less Traveled. This movie is specifically targeted at audiences who are feeling sad, lost, or lonely. Michael felt the need to produce clean, Christian comedy that would appeal to the broken and the hurting. His great desire was to make them laugh and find something enjoyable to watch. He has stated that it is his calling and his passion to make others laugh, and he has started an amazing ministry through this.
It's not easy to find comedy that is clean and appropriate for families, but there are many who desire to make it possible. Thou Shalt Laugh has produced five movies in an attempt to make Christian comedy more available. These films have included stars such as Patricia Heaton, Tim Conway, Chonda Pierce, John Tesh, and famous comedian, Sinbad. These movies are all hilarious and filled with only family friendly comedy. Many people think that it is impossible to be a successful comedian without involving vulgarity and inappropriate themes. However, Christian comedians are proving naysayers wrong. In fact, many who aren't Christians greatly enjoy comedy that is clean and are beginning to recognize that vulgarity does not equal humor.
Laughing on Purpose is not rated by the Motion Picture Association of America, but is considered appropriate for all audiences. As always, it is highly recommended that parents review all content to determine what is suitable for their family to watch.
