Privileged Species
It's a daunting question that has been debated and discussed for many centuries; are we here for a reason? Were we placed here on this earth by a purposeful creator, or are we merely the result of random clumps of cells magically forming together to eventually produce life after millions of years of accidental trial and error? This is a question that may never go away, as no matter what people believe or what evidence is given, both sides will always be contested. In Privileged Species: How the Cosmos is designed for Human Life, this question is asked and then evidence for the Creation point of view is presented and explained.
Newly Discovered Evidence
This documentary, Privileged Species, produced by Discovery Institute, takes a look at the newly discovered evidence and presents a case for why we are more than accidents or random chance. There is a purpose behind our lives, and we have been put on this earth for a reason. Through new developments in science, genetics and physics, Privileged Species examines the carbon, water, and oxygen molecules and shows how these elements that come together to form life work in tandem to accomplish marvelous and unbelievable things. These amazing scientific processes only further the evidence that our world was created by a loving and intelligent Creator.
Geneticist Michael Denton, Ph.D., meticulously walks the viewers through each step of the carbon, oxygen, and water molecules, explaining their functions and showcasing how these elements all come together for form and create life. Michael Denton is not only a biochemist, but an author as well, having written two books about the Creation vs. Evolution debate. In 1985, he released his book Evolution: A Theory in Crisis, which critiqued the theory of evolution, presenting many of its flaws and inconsistencies. Several years later in 1998, Denton wrote his second book, Nature's Destiny in which he further explained his non-Darwinian theory about the origin of life.
The Origin of Life
The origin of life has long been discussed and debated, and the two most popular beliefs have become the theory of Evolution and the belief that God created the world and was the intelligent designer behind everything. Christians have come to understand that the truth to where this world came from can be found in the Bible, with God creating everything in 6 days. While Christians accept this belief and know it to be true, atheists and other groups of unbelievers have come to form another theory; that this world evolved about by random chance and mysterious clumps of cells randomly forming to create life.
The theory of Evolution was popularized in the 19th century by people like Charles Darwin, who didn't accept the belief that God created the world. On his voyage on the HMS Beagle, he began to notice changes in a group of finches he was observing and began to wonder if species could change over time. After years of studying and research, he began to develop and popularize this theory of evolution. His work would be revered by scholars and would continue to be developed even after his death.
The Doctrine of Evolution
Privileged Species explains that In a nutshell, evolution states that in the beginning, millions and millions of years ago, there was a "big bang". After millions of years of nothing, the first cell was formed, and this was able to grow into more and after millions of more years of development, our world began to form along with life itself. This theory is still popular today and is taught in schools and colleges the world over. This is a wonderful atheistic theory as it is able to exclude God from the equation entirely. If someone decides they do not believe in God, it is possible they will accept the doctrine of evolution, because it is able to explain the existence of the world without a need for a creator.
The Christian View of Creation
The creation account, on the other hand, explains that in the beginning, God created the earth in six days. Our world is so incredible and so perfectly balanced and formed that Creationists can only conclude that it was all formed by a Higher Power, an intelligent being who was beyond human power and comprehension. The Bible explains this belief well, and in Genesis 1 & 2 it gives the account of God creating the earth.
On the first day, God created the heavens and the earth. He then went on to breathe light into the world, creating both darkness and light. On the second day, God created the sky, an atmosphere for the earth. This would allow it to be habitable because oxygen could now be breathed and would allow for life to exist. On Day 3, God would cover the earth with dry land, patches where there would be no water. Day 4 would see the forming of the sun, moon, and stars in the sky, allowing for time to be measured by the rotation of the moon and sun.
On day 5, God created life. Starting with every water-dwelling creature, God formed the fish of the sea. After he saw that that was good, he created the birds in the air as well. Having created both the sea-dwelling and sky-dwelling creatures, he finally formed the dry-land creatures on day 6. This would not only include all animals that live on dry land, but he would create the first man and woman. He decided to create them in His own image, and he gave them dominion over all the other creatures of the earth. Finally, on the 7th day, he rested, setting a precedent for what would come to be known as the Sabbath.
Compelling Evidence for a Privileged Species
These are the two most commonly held beliefs, and in this documentary, Dr. Michael Denton presents all the compelling evidence for the Creation testament. While all of this can be rationalized with science and debated for a long time to come, it truly comes down to a matter of the heart .Whether we are willing to accept that God created the earth and that we owe him our lives comes down to a matter of the heart.
This is an excellent movie to watch and show to others, as hopefully it will convince them to make a personal decision to pursue a relationship with Christ. The Privileged Species DVD has a run-time of 33 minutes and features Robert Blythe, Andres Williams, and Michael Denton.
